How often should you have your DPF cleaned?

The type of driving you do and the environment you work in are the most important factors in deciding when you should clean your diesel particulate filter (DPF).

If you do mostly highway driving and are carrying full loads, you can probably go a little longer between cleanings than the driver who does a lot of stop-and-go driving or who works off-road.

Why? Regeneration of the DPF filter is more effective when the truck is operating at higher temperatures — like when you’re driving at highway speeds and pulling full loads.

Trucks that do more “stopping and starting” driving may never get up to the temperatures needed for a proper DPF regeneration.

We recommend that most trucks with diesel emissions systems get their DPFs cleaned every 75,000 to 100,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

Signs that your DPF needs cleaning

Bad or clogged Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) symptoms include:
• Check engine light (the first common sign of a bad DPF)
• Decreased engine performance
• Poor fuel efficiency
• Trouble starting the engine
• Unexplained, strange smells
• Turbo damage

Can a clogged DPF cause turbo failure?

Definitely! A blocked DPF keeps exhaust gas from passing through the exhaust system at the proper rate. When that happens, back pressure and exhaust gas temperatures raise inside the turbine housing.

And that can cause a number of problems, including oil leaks, oil carbonization inside the turbo, and exhaust gas leaks from the turbo.
